Are lasers safe?
|
Lasers are very specific, intense beams of light. All light is a form of electromagnetic radiation. Laser light is not like that of x-rays used for diagnosis or the radiation used to treat cancer. Rays of this type of radiation have a wavelength of 0.1 nanometers (nm) whereas dermatologic lasers have wavelengths of 500 – 10,600 nm. Thus laser are safe for children and pregnant women.
Eye protection is an important component of laser surgery. Staff are protected with goggles and patients are protected with eye coverings, goggles, or lenses.
Lasers are very safe and effective tools in the hands of an experienced and conscientious operator. Only trained and experienced persons should operate a laser.
